Classic Patty Melt
Crispy, buttery bread, gooey melted cheese, caramelized onions, and a juicy beef patty—this Classic Patty Melt is the ultimate comfort food! It’s a delicious cross between a burger and a grilled cheese, making it a diner-style favorite you can easily make at home.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon butter
1 large onion, thinly sliced
4 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional, for extra crispiness)
Instructions
Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape into two thin patties, roughly the size of your bread slices.
Caramelize the Onions: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Remove from heat.
Assemble the Patty Melt:
Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise or butter on the outside of each bread slice.
Layer a slice of cheese on the unbuttered side of the bread, followed by a beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and the second bread slice (buttered side facing out).
Grill to Perfection: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook the sandwich for 2-3 minutes per side, pressing slightly, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Serve & Enjoy: Slice in half and serve hot with pickles, fries, or a side of coleslaw.
This homemade Patty Melt is packed with rich flavors and satisfying textures—just like your favorite diner classic!
