Yorkshire Puddings: The Golden, Puffy Classic No Sunday Roast Should Be Without

How to Make Yorkshire Puddings — Step by Step

Step 1 — Preheat
Heat your oven to high heat (about 220°C / 425°F). This intense heat is what makes the batter rise.

Step 2 — Heat the pans
Add a teaspoon of oil or beef drippings into each muffin cup or Yorkshire tray. Place it in the oven until the oil is very hot and almost smoking.

Step 3 — Mix the batter
Whisk together equal parts flour, milk, and eggs with a pinch of salt until smooth. Let the batter rest — this gives better rise.

Step 4 — Pour & Bake
Carefully remove the hot pan and pour in the batter. Return to the oven immediately.

Step 5 — Don’t Open the Door
Bake until tall, golden, and puffed — usually 20–25 minutes. Opening the oven early can make them collapse.

Serving Ideas

  • Classic with roast beef and gravy

  • Fill with sausages and onions

  • Serve mini versions as appetizers

  • Try sweet versions with jam or sugar (yes — people do!)

Yorkshire puddings may look simple, but few sides bring this much drama and comfort to the plate. Crispy, airy, and perfect for soaking up sauces — they always steal the spotlight on roast dinner day.
