Step-by-Step Recipe: Traditional Fideo with Beef and Potatoes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced

  • 1 package (7 oz) fideo pasta or thin vermicelli

  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

  • 3 cups beef broth or water

  • 2 tablespoons oil

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon cumin

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional for spice)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Step 1: Brown the Beef

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until it’s browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease and set the beef aside.

Step 2: Toast the Fideo

In the same pan, add another tablespoon of oil. Pour in the fideo pasta and toast it gently, stirring constantly, until it turns golden brown. This step adds a nutty depth of flavor that makes fideo so unique.

Step 3: Add the Aromatics

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the toasted fideo. Sauté for 2–3 minutes until fragrant and lightly softened.
