Texas Turtle Sheet Cake is a delightful twist on the classic Texas Sheet Cake, combining rich chocolate flavors with caramel and pecans to mimic the beloved turtle candy. Here's a recipe to make this indulgent dessert:
Ingredients:
For the cake:
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups self-rising flour
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup strong black coffee
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 large eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
For the frosting:
1/4 cup unsalted butter
4 tablespoons buttermilk
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
For the topping:
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions:
Prepare the Cake Batter:
In a large bowl, combine the self-rising flour and granulated sugar. Set aside.
In a saucepan over medium heat, mix 1 cup of butter, strong black coffee, and 1/3 cup of cocoa powder. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
Pour the hot mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Using a hand mixer on medium speed, blend until well combined.
Add the eggs and 1/2 cup of buttermilk to the batter. Continue mixing on medium speed until the batter is smooth and uniform.
Bake the Cake:
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, ensuring it's evenly distributed.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Once done, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool slightly in the pan.
Prepare the Frosting:
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/4 cup of butter, 4 tablespoons of buttermilk, and 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Stir continuously until the mixture reaches a boil.
Remove from heat and gradually whisk in the powdered sugar until the frosting is smooth and free of lumps.
Assemble the Cake:
While the cake is still warm, pour the prepared frosting over the top, spreading it evenly.
Immediately sprinkle the chopped pecans and semi-sweet chocolate chips over the frosting.
Drizzle the caramel sauce generously over the top.
Serve:
Allow the cake to cool completely, allowing the frosting to set and toppings to adhere.
Once cooled, slice into squares and serve.
This Texas Turtle Sheet Cake offers a harmonious blend of moist chocolate cake, creamy frosting, and the delightful crunch of pecans, all enhanced by a rich caramel drizzle. It's perfect for gatherings, celebrations, or simply as a treat to satisfy your sweet tooth.
